Do you have braces? If so, congratulations on working toward your gorgeous and beautiful smile! However, we do understand that having braces can be inconvenient and bothersome at times, especially while you eat, and we are happy to help you! While you have braces, it is important to eat the right foods in order to keep your appliance in tip-top shape, and orthodontists today strongly recommend avoiding the following foods if you wish to have a successful and productive treatment process:

• Gum
• Ice
• Nuts
• Caramel
• Pretzels
• Corn chips
• Popcorn
• Hard crackers and cookies
• Chunky peanut butter
• Gooey chocolate bars
• Hard candy, like jolly ranchers and jaw breakers
• Chewy candy, like taffy and gummy bears

We also recommend that you cut the following foods into small pieces before you eat them; that way you can eat your favorite foods without breaking or ruining your braces:

• Apples
• Pears
• Corn on the cob
• Pizza
• Meat
• Raw vegetables
• Chewy bread, like French/Italian bread

It may seem that the right foods are hard to find while you are cautious with many different foods, but there are plenty of foods that are acceptable to eat while you have braces, including:

• Soup
• Ice cream
• Yogurt
• Hulless popcorn
• Cheese
• Mashed potatoes
• Bananas
• Creamy peanut butter
• Melons
• Applesauce
• Pudding
• Soft cookies
• Soft crackers
• Soft pasta, like spaghetti and macaroni and cheese
