Toothache is common nowadays. Anyone can experience toothache regardless of age. This painful annoyance can make it difficult to lead a normal life. The pain around your jaws and teeth can be unbearable. You can experience tooth pain due to an infection, broken filling, receding gums, or tooth decay.

In many cases, the toothache is self-manageable. You can try some tooth pain remedies to cure the condition. However, if the pain is persistent, you need to visit your dentist. When the pain is caused by an infection, it might need medical intervention to know the cause and cure it. You can consider the following five tooth pain remedies to manage your pain. All these remedies will offer temporary relief regardless of the cause.

1. Saltwater Rinse

This is one of the common and most effective tooth pain remedies. For this treatment, you will only need salt and water. It is an effective first-line home remedy that can address almost all types of toothaches. Saltwater is a disinfectant. If a minor infection is causing tooth pain, it will cure the pain.

Saltwater will loosen the debris and food particles stuck between your teeth. In addition to toothache, saltwater can be effective to reduce any inflammation as well as oral wounds. Another benefit of saltwater is that it will not cause any side effects.

For the saltwater rinse, you will need eight ounces of warm water and teaspoon of salt. You will have to use this saltwater as a mouthwash. Gently floss around your infected teeth to remove food and any other things stuck inside. Avoid swallowing and repeat this couple of times in a day to get relief from your tooth pain.

2. Cold Compress

Toothache remedy, cold compress

Cold compress is another effective remedy for teeth pain. We normally use a cold compress for swelling or pain. It can also be used to get relief from tooth pain especially when it is caused by trauma. While applying the cold compress, the blood vessel in that area will start to constrict. As a result, you will not experience severe pain. Also, a cold compress will help to get rid of inflammation and swelling. You can use a cold compress for three to four days to get rid of the pain completely.

As stated earlier, this home remedy is very effective for the pain related tooth trauma. However, when the pain is caused by an infection or accompanied by fever, consult your dentist for a oral check-up.

For the cold compress, you will need a towel and ice. Use the towel to wrap the ice and then apply that towel-wrapped bag on the affected area for around fifteen to twenty minutes. You will have to repeat this several times in a day to maximize the benefits.

3. Garlic

Tooth Remedy, Garlic

Garlic is one of the best oral remedies to cure many oral and stomach issues. Garlic has medical properties. It can kill the harmful bacteria inside your mouth. These bacteria can cause dental plague leading to toothache. Garlic does not kill harmful bacteria only. It can also be effective to cure your toothache.

When you crush garlic cloves, it will start releasing allicin. This oily liquid substance will act as a natural disease fighter. Also, garlic is safe and will not cause any side effects. The only downside is the smell that can be easily recognizable from your breath.

For garlic treatment, you need to crush a garlic clove and make a garlic paste. Apply this paste to the aching tooth. If you want, you can also add a little salt. If you do not like to apply garlic paste, you can chew a fresh garlic clove to get the same benefit.

4. Clove

Tooth Remedy, clove

Clove oil is widely used to treat toothache. So, the list will be incomplete if we do not add the clove oil. Clove has been used for a long to treat tooth pain. It will numb the pain and reduce the inflammation as well. Also, the clove is rich in eugenol. Thus is antiseptic and can help to cure inflammation and infection.

For this treatment, you will need only clove oil. Clove is available in the market. Buy a reliable brand to get a quality result. Get clove oil and soak a cotton ball in the oil. Apply that soaked cotton to your sore tooth. You might experience a burning sensation. If you want to avoid this, you can dilute the clove oil with olive oil. You can use water as well.

Take a small glass of water and then add a few drops of clove oil and use it as a mouthwash. Clove oil should not be used more than twice in a day. If you are using it for your kids, dilute it with water to minimize the effect.

5. Peppermint

Tooth Remedy, Peppermint

Peppermint is as effective as cloves. Peppermint is known for its numbing properties. It has menthol that will help to soothe tooth pain. Peppermint is antibacterial and can work as a natural fighter against mild infections.

You can use both peppermint tea or peppermint oil for your tooth pain. You can soak a cotton ball in peppermint oil and then apply it to that affected area. You will get immediate relief.

For peppermint tea, you will need dried peppermint leaves and one cup of boiling water. Put the peppermint leaves in the boiling water and allow it to steep for twenty minutes. Once it is cooled down, use it as a mouthwash. You can also use warm peppermint tea bags to hold against your aching tooth for several minutes. Repeat it whenever you experience severe pain.

All these home remedies are available in your kitchen. They can be used to get immediate relief. However, you might not get permanent relief when the pain is caused by an infection. If the pain continues for more than a couple of days without any obvious reason, it is better to make an appointment with an experienced dentist.

If you avoid the pain for a long, it might aggravate the condition. In rare cases, it might lead to tooth decay. So, address the pain as soon as possible to get a cost-effective solution. For major issues, you are going to spend much more.
